It's not hard to make their own clients to play, so it would be impossible to entirely block them without disabling access for executables that aren't whitelisted. But for blocking minecraft entirely, you'd have to block the executable files and make sure that they can't run programs on the local machine.

They don't have to login for this, in fact, if they are using a cracked client, then they can keep their usernames and probably access minecraft servers elsewhere. There is still single player minecraft which can be played over LAN. that's not happened, and I would be very surprised if it happened to anyone, as people aren't going to own up to slacking off! Weirdly, no one has contacted us to say "That game I was playing that's nothing to do with work stopped working when you changed the firewall rules.". Since then we've had no other problems, so it's not always going to be as bad as it might seem! When they didn't bother, I checked our firewall log to suss out the VPN/card machine issue. we made everyone aware they should let us know if anything stops working on the network that previously did work. Also we have a card machine for credit/debit card transactions on the network and that also stopped working. I know it will seem daunting but make sure users are aware you are changing the rules and if it doesn't work they should ring you asap to unblock the port.Įxactly - it was a bit of a ball ache for us, as immediately we noticed a small team using a VPN out of our office - the VPN stopped working. +1 Kev Hodgson Block all outgoing unused ports which is a security best practice.
